“As far as we have learned the father of Schmoel Shoel of Hamovitz was Judah Shishitza of Proshitza. Exactly when he was born, what he did for a living, where he died or when he died, or even the name of his wife could not, at present, be ascertained. It is believed that Judah had four children. Three of them seem to have left no trace that we can find, for even their names are unknown. The forth was Schmoel Schoel.
“Now Schmoel Shoel was no ordinary type of man you can meet anywhere today. He was a grand old fellow, and full of ambition. To prove this to the world he tried to beat King Solomon, and obey the biblical prediction that the Jews would be as numerous as the sands of the ocean by marrying four times.
“ He married the first time at the age of 16, divorcing his first wife, whose name is unknown to us, shortly thereafter. No children were born of this first marriage.
“His second wife was NACHAMAH LEBANSKY who bore him four children. Three of the children and Nachamah were taken away by the Black Death which swept Europe in 1855 and one son, Jacob, survived.
“Schmoel Shoel’s third wife was SLAVAH BUNYAN and she gave him eight children. In 1885, Slavah died and Shmoel Shoel married for the fourth and last time. He married RIVE CAPLAN, a widow with two daughters. With Rive, Schmoel Shoel had six more children. Coincidentally, Rive Caplan’s two daughters married a son and grandson of Schmoel Shoel by prior marriages.”
THE FAMILY TREE
"One tree outlives the mighty oak
Because it's made of special folk,
Through generations changing form,
Providing shelter from life's storm.
"Our parents' parents and before,
Who may have lived on distant shores,
They root our lives in memories;
We're nourished by their histories.
"A sturdy trunk that lends support
And gives us care of every sort -
The fathers, mothers, uncles, aunts,
Who nurture us like tender plants.
"The children, branching toward the sky,
Have brand new dreams and deeds to try.
And babies, buds that seem so small,
Will flower so the tree grows tall."
WE HAVE MAINTAINED A DIRECTORY OF COMINSKY FAMILY MEMBERS SINCE 1928. PLEASE COMPLETE THE REGISTRY FORM BELOW FOR YOURSELF AND OTHER ADULT FAMILY MEMBERS SO WE CAN CONTINUE TO KEEP IT UP TO DATE.

We created this Cominsky Family Circle website in an to attempt to connect our growing and wide spread family. The most recent estimate is that almost 450 of us have descended from Schmoel Shoel Cominsky and the three wonderful women he married; Nachameh Labansky, Slaveh Bunyan, and Riva Kaplan.
Our parents and/or grandparents held regular meetings of the Cominsky Family Circle in such places as the McAlpen Hotel in NYC and the Veteran's Hall in Richmond Hill, Queens as well as celebrating our organizations anniversaries both at catering halls in New York and hotels in the Catskills. Each of these celebrations was memorialized in a booklet that contained an updated edition of the family tree and a registry of family names and addresses. Since there were large clusters of family living in close proximity to each other we grew up knowing lots of cousins even though we couldn't quite comprehend the exact relationship.
We are once again accepting the challenge of bring the extended family together, but this time, electronically. An older version of our website was developed several years ago with an early generation of software which made it difficult to edit and cumbersome to maintain. That, combined with a full time job resulted in it being frequently out of date.
What has changed? My retirement and technological advances that have made it easier to maintain a website.
Your assistance is need, however. The family tree is years out of date and we need to learn about the new additions: marriages, babies, and, sadly, those we have lost. We are also interested in sharing your simchas , family photos and memorials. Finally, we would like to build our contact list to keep you up to date on family activities and so we are requesting you send us email and regular mail addresses for any family member with whom you are in touch (see below).
In an era where people are interested in "finding their roots" we are lucky that our Cominsky ancestors have given us a strong connection to the past and now it is our job to maintain it.

THE ORIGIN OF THE COMINSKY FAMILY
"There are two lasting gifts we can give our children. One is roots, the other wings."
